As all of this is going on, Starbreeze announced today that the publishing rights for System Shock 3have been sold back to developer OtherSide Entertainment. This meant they went from having a highly optimistic view of their future to struggling to stay afloat financially. Overkill's The Walking Deaddid not perform well, their longtime CEO stepped down, and the company even got raided for insider trading. ![]() System Shock 3 is a fantastic title developed in cooperation with the industry legend Warren Spector and I am looking forward to seeing the game released," said Starbreeze’s acting CEO Mikael Nermark about the license changing hands.Game developer and publisher Starbreeze has been going through some hard times over the past fiscal quarter. “I believe this is the best solution for us, although it is sad that we cannot complete the project with OtherSide. ![]() However, the company's announcement does include the statement that Starbreeze "fully expects to be reimbursed for costs the company has had in connection with the development of the game." Starbreeze originally signed on to invest $12 million into OtherSide's System Shock revival over the course of development, but it's not clear how much it's actually spent to date, or how much it expects to get for the rights now. However, it seems that things have gone south in that particular partnership and Starbreeze now wants to sell back the publishing rights to OtherSide and expects to be reimbursed for their contributions. Back in 2017, Starbreeze Studios partnered with OtherSide Entertainment in order to publish OtherSide's upcoming immersive sim System Shock 3. ![]()
